A 21st floor apartment in a 1960's modern concrete building in Chinatown, unoccupied for several years, was in need of a makeover to meet the needs of an aging mother. The client desired warmth, function and accessibility for an elderly occupant, and a sense of openness to accommodate a gathering of family members. Integrating "green" materials also appealed to the client.
Challenges during the project included a 50% decrease in the kitchen budget after the construction documents had been sent out for bids; unforeseen concrete columns, coop board insistence on maintaining the kitchen footprint, a low ceiling height, and unlevel walls to name a few!
We managed the design through value engineering to reduce the budget while staying on track to the original design concept. We cleverly replaced materials with less expensive ones, only used custom details where needed and focused on the impact of the design on the end user.
Per the client's request and unforeseen circumstances, we truly utilized all our holistic skills as we unpacked the client's things, arranging all items in the kitchen, bathrooms, the bedrooms and ensuring everything was user ready upon move in.
This project was one of the most rewarding experiences I personally have had as a designer. It challenged me to rise to the next level, expanding my design and feng shui skills to be truly holistic.
Our reward included being invited to the first family dinner in the space where the client insisted that I had known her previously as the space already felt like home.
