Duplex Renovation in Upper West Side, Manhattan
Apartment Renovation and Decoration
The project brief consisted of a new, warmer color scheme, additional storage throughout, to better utilize the working fireplace, to enhance the lighting, and to design the interior of a glass conservatory to be a creative haven for artistic pursuits. Plus the design of an outdoor room on their 500 square foot outdoor terrace.
Working with the clients needs to maintain a balanced family unit and as little disruption as possible, the project was designed in one phase and then implemented in multiple phases over the course of (2) years.
A soft golden spectrum was used for the main color palette, with a stairwell of claret to create a sense of transition to the upper, personal level of the apartment. The palette was enhanced through the use of Biazzio mosaic tiles for the fireplace surround, and custom gold gilded finish on the floor to ceiling storage unit in the foyer area plus an antique reproduction picture frame hung in the middle of a mirrored wall.
The client's first comments were the fact that the design had actually increased the size of the space in the apartment simply through the color palette. Plus, the added storage made city life more livable as a young family continually accumulates "stuff". The customized cabinets in the office utilized the minimal square footage to its fullest potential while not overwhelming the space.
Eco friendly materials such as reclaimed woods, and milk paints were used throughout the design process which reflects S. Lee Wright's commitment to the environment.
An outdoor kitchen in a child friendly space with easy to care for foliage have been designed and will be completed in 2009.
