Gordon/Stewart Residence
Kitchen Renovation Consultation
Glasgow, Scotland
The Gordon/Stewart residence was a two bedroom apartment, typical of so many Victorian town house conversions in Glasgow where the original charm of such places can still be seen in the high ceilings and grand windows but where 1950's renovations have left awkwardly segregated rooms with little regard to the original features of the space. The couple wanted to bring back some of the original charm while updating the key spaces so important to the lifestyle of a modern family – mainly the kitchen and bathrooms.
The biggest challenge was to keep the living room and kitchen separate while providing the possibility of them opening up onto one another. Ultimately the kitchen was made into a completely separate room, with a double-sided thick sliding door that could be closed to hide the kitchen space when the need required, or opened to allow access into the rest of the space.
The added thickness of the sliding door served two objectives: to create a sense of structure and purpose from the living room perspective, making the piece look as if it was part of the design; and to provide much-needed storage space on the interior of the door. The door was outfitted with open shelves for food storage readily available during meal preparation. This also solved the lack of countertop space in the kitchen.
The ultimate solution has worked better than even the client had anticipated – allowing a daily flexibility that meets their ever-evolving family requirements with the surprising benefit that the thickness of the door plus the food contained therein completely prohibits the noise of the kitchen equipment such as the dishwasher from traveling into the lounge area.
