McNeill Residence
Bathroom Renovation project

Glasgow, Scotland

As a young growing family, my clients immediately wanted to upgrade the family bathroom. The house is a beautiful traditional sandstone family home in Glasgow, Scotland, built in 1853. With many of the original features such as wooden shutters, cornices and fireplaces still in place, the client felt there wasn’t much that was required to change. But the bathroom was a different story – a varnished pine monstrosity from the 1970's with a hideous green carpet.

It was small (just 5ft 8in by 5ft 8in) and enclosed, so light was a problem. The Designer advised to go up to the roof for light and to keep bathroom furniture simple to enhance the feeling of space. Additionally, the use of bright colors was encouraged since this reflected the client’s own style and sense of adventure; mirrors on two walls were added to increase the feeling of light and space, and finally a slate tile was put on the floor because it feels great underfoot!

The client says that now that it’s finished people can’t believe that the bathroom is the same size as the old one. And although it’s modern, the simple design means that it’s much more sympathetic to the style of such a traditional house than the previous bathroom.  The same design concept that worked so well in the first one is being replicated into the Master Bedroom En Suite!
