Kitchen Design Project
Point Lookout, Long Island, New York
The client needed help completing a 15 year renovation project of his lovely European Arts & Crafts style house in a sea side community of Long Island. Because the kitchen space was to be the literal 'heart' of the house, it was essential to get this design just right. The Designer took some time to understand the client’s design intention for the house over the 1.5 decade project and to create a design concept to move it into its next, and hopefully final stage.
Ultimately the design concept was inspired from William Morris’s famous adage, "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful and believe to be beautiful." The Designer put a new spin on the traditional kitchen layout by focusing on task areas versus the historic 3 point triangle lay-out with the creation of multiple islands for each task focusing on functionality (cooking, prepping, cleaning, breakfast and serving) plus the selective use of beautiful Arts & Crafts details and contemporary finishes such as concrete and cherry counters. Other innovative design solutions included the exclusive use of SubZero refrigeration drawers throughout, a flexible banquet dining area, and a shallow cookbook display area.
