Bathroom Renovation
Upper West Side, New York
A bathroom in a beautiful Upper West Side apartment was lacking the glory and functionality it once had. Old fixtures, stained, cracked tiles, and inefficient space utilization were not working for this lovely family's two teenage daughters.
This building has well maintained classic elements with pre-war architectural details a plenty! Designing a bathroom that two people can share comfortably, while aligning the design with the building's classic architectural style, was our goal. The result is harmony.
Not to say this was devoid of design challenges and surprises! A vertical pipe running through the space needed to be effortlessly and elegantly hidden; asbestos discovered under the floor needed removal, risers needed updating, tensions between building management and contractors needed buffering. All typical project challenges!
The design team managed all of the above challenges plus through cleverly creating symmetrical looking vanities to hide the pipe and give extra storage, designing a handmade detail tile running the length of the space to act as a chair rail combined with man made subway tiles for the addition of luxury without excessive cost. The final touch was the use of Venetian plaster on the walls to add a hint of textured color with practical maintenance all at the same time!
The holistic nature of our design firm coupled with the client's warm reception to our design process, resulted in a project that was a success for both designer and client alike! We were awarded First Prize for the NKBA Metropolitan Awards in October 2009 for this project.
